Preventative Dentistry

Periodontics is concerned with the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases that affect the gums and supporting structures of the teeth. By adhering to Proper Continuing Care, our hope is that you will avoid gum disease, which is a chronic bacterial infection that affects the gums and bone supporting the teeth. The earliest stage of gum disease is called gingivitis. There is usually little or no discomfort, but signs are red, swollen gums that bleed easily. This stage is reversible with good oral hygiene habits and regular dental cleanings. However, untreated gingivitis can lead to Periodontal Disease which will require a scaling and root planing procedure or “deep cleaning” by our hygienists.

Signs of Periodontal Disease

The disease process begins when bacterial plaque is not removed by proper brushing and flossing. The gums become irritated and inflamed and the gum tissue starts to separate from the teeth and form “pockets” which you are unable to clean out with regular brushing and flossing. Bacteria move into these pockets and destroy the bone holding your teeth in. If left untreated, this process can ultimately result in tooth loss. We’re not only concerned about the health of your oral cavity with periodontal disease, as bacteria causing this has been linked to several systemic diseases including diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, pregnancy complications, Alzheimer’s, etc.
